Bringing the Future of Laparoscopic Training to SurgSoc at UCD
Last week, we had the incredible opportunity to showcase Laptitude, our innovative laparoscopic skills training system, at the SurgSoc Conference at University College Dublin. With this year’s theme—”Redefining the Scalpel: Harnessing AI and Robotics to Shape the Future of Surgery”—we knew it was the perfect event to introduce students to a new way of learning laparoscopic skills.
Laptitude at SurgSoc
At Grendel Medical, we’ve been working hard to develop Laptitude, a system designed to revolutionise how surgical trainees develop their laparoscopic core skills. Laptitude consists of three different software components, a hardware system with controllers that replicate laparoscopic tools and a base station replicating trochar points in a patient’s abdomen. At SurgSoc, students got hands-on experience with Curious Cases, the first instalment of our software. Using the laparoscopic controllers inserted through the base station, they practised core surgical skills such as positioning, clipping and ligation.
“Playing Curious Cases feels very intuitive and smooth. It’s also just a lot of fun.”
An Overwhelmingly Positive Response
Watching students engage with Laptitude was an amazing experience for our team. The enthusiasm was immediate—students not only found the game fun, but many kept on playing, determined to beat their previous scores. This kind of excitement is exactly why we created Laptitude: to make learning laparoscopic skills more engaging, rewarding, and accessible.
“It’s such a cool and interactive way of getting all the surgical skills. There’s tactile feedback which is really cool and you also learn to deal with the lack of depth perception straight away. On top of that, the graphics and gameplay are really fun.”
Events like these reaffirm our belief that Laptitude can lower the learning curve for laparoscopic training, making a career in minimally invasive surgery more attractive and approachable. With the global shortage of surgeons, we’re proud to be creating a tool that helps students develop the necessary skills with confidence.
What’s Next? Try Laptitude at SAGES!
We’re thrilled to announce that Laptitude is now available for pre-order on our website. The next opportunity to try out Laptitude will be in Long Beach, California during the SAGES 2025 Annual Meeting.—where we’ll be giving even more (future) surgeons the chance to experience the future of laparoscopic training firsthand.
